There’s a number of theories about Vincent Van Gogh and the incident where his ear was cut off. The standard art history story is that he cut it off himself after a disagreement with Paul Gauguin, and that the drastic action stemmed from his own mental health issues. But two German art historians, Hans Kaufmann and Rita Wildegans, spent 10 years reviewing the police investigation, witness accounts, and the artists’ own letters, and they argue that Gauguin most likely sliced off the ear with his sword during a fight, and the two artists agreed to hush up the truth. Then there’s another theory that it was the news of his brother Theo’s engagement – received in a letter on the exact same day as the ear incident – that triggered the event, because Vincent was a little freaked out that the impending marriage might have kept Theo from continuing to support him financially.

I don’t have the answer, but wouldn’t it be fun if – in an alternative universe – Vincent and Evander Holyfield bonded over their respective fates and then started their own “Damaged Ear Support Group” …? I could see them together in a buddy movie …
