I was going to have some chips with my lunch today when I noticed a new style of clip on the chip bag (below left). Usually we have regular clothespin-style clips to keep the chip bags sealed, so this was a new one to me. But when I pulled it off the chip bag and took a closer look (below center and right), I thought “this thing sure looks familiar.” Scroll down for more …

What this chip bag clip reminded me of was some of artist Carroll Dunham’s characters from his paintings from the late 1990s, some of which can be seen below as compared to the red clip. Please note, the Dunham images below are generally just details from bigger and more-complex paintings, but I wanted to extract some of the characters to show them as comparison points. The one exception to this is the Dunham painting bottom left, which is “Once I Land on Mars (Copied from Grace),” from 1999. As you can see, some of his paintings from this time period are filled with numerous characters like the ones seen here.
